Hello. Welcome to my corner of the web world.

I am the author of SEA LIONS IN THE PARKING LOT: ANIMALS ON THE MOVE IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC (MineditionUS, October 2021), illustrated by Annika Siems. The book has been named a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection, a Green Earth Book Award Short List Nominee for 2022, and a Bank Street Best Children’s book of the Year 2022. My second picture book, HANG TOUGH HORSESHOE CRAB! HOW TO SURVIVE FOR 450 MILLION YEARS (AND COUNTING) will be published in 2025. I am at work on several other children’s book projects, including a documentary about horseshoe crabs.

As a journalist, I write for children and adults, usually about wildlife, places, and books. My writing has been published in the New York Times Book Review, Afar Magazine, the Atlantic, Catapult Magazine, Bookforum, the Village Voice, and elsewhere. I have worked as a book, newspaper, and digital editor at different times in my life.

I’m a member of the National Association of Science Writers, the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and 12 X 12. I was a volunteer expedition leader with the Wildlife Conservation Society, and recently completed an Advance Certificate in Animal Behavior and Conservation. I am the mother of three boys, one of whom recently joined me in getting certified to dive. I am a city girl who loves the ocean.
